I was at a friend's today and was slightly envious of her mad organizational skills. I want to be organized. I try to organize. But some how I always fall short of finding good, lasting systems. I don't have great vision as to how everything will work together or what I'll do if I get more stuff that will need to fit into my organization. Plus, I can't quite figure out a good system on a good budget. I finally found a nice looking file cabinet with 2 locking drawers, but I think it's going to have to take the back burner to the fence for a little while at least. And if I can't buy a $200 file cabinet, I surely can't justify buying a $135 Tupperware pantry storage set. Rats.
I am even having a hard time organizing my files properly. I made a good effort tonight, but I didn't even make it half way. It just isn't in my wheelhouse* I guess.
*I'd never heard that phrase "in my wheelhouse" until Matt used it a while ago. I had no clue what he was talking about or that it was a real saying. Since then I've heard it quite a bit! How did I miss it previously? Am I the only one?

Our city has surplus auctions/sales every once in a while. We got a 4 drawer file cabinet for $10. They were selling 2 drawer ones for $5. They were all in really good condition. It's worth calling your city or checking their website to see if they have anything like that.
We got a set of labeled file folders for a wedding gift and it's been great. But it's hard to find time to actually file papers away and go through and get rid of old papers. And I've never heard the wheelhouse phrase, so it's not just you.
I've never heard of the word wheelhouse, let alone a phrase using it.
As far as filing, I have a big (ugly) filing cabinet that I got for free, and it's a mess. I have three file drawers in my desk and only one has files in it. The others are empty, waiting for me to get around to the part where I actually use them. So you're not alone on the organizational issue either.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who'd never heard of wheelhouse.
My files are in decent shape. Not horrible, but not good. The files I have the most trouble with are: medical, investments, and house stuff. It seems like there are sub-categories that have to be addressed there, but I can't quite figure out how to break it up well.
It would be interesting to check out the surplus auction, however, I'm trying to be particular about this file cabinet because it will be a piece of furniture in our living room (I'm thinking more accessible=more frequent filing=less paper mess on the counter). Plus both drawers need locking (since Dean is a rummager). Otherwise I'd just get a metal one off craigslist.
I too have never heard the wheelhouse phrase! Interesting! Sometimes for the subcategories, I label it investments-(whatever the subcategory is) That way they are all under investments and then are sub-labeled within that category.
