Caving in

I have been extremely resistant to joining facebook, mostly because I don't need another time waster and excuse for not doing projects. Plus, blogging has already fulfilled a lot of the connections I wanted to rekindle.

But I decided today that I miss out on lots of local happenings amongst my church friends since I don't have an account. I don't think I'm intentionally left out of the loop. I've just been resistant to joining their most used communication of choice and essentially leave myself out of the loop.

So I created an account.

Sheesh. What is this world coming to?

Facebook is great fun. But oh-so-very addicting. I've grounded myself lately from spending too much time on the computer - hence the lack of blogging. But it's so fun to reconnect with friends who got lost in moving or whatever else.

I finally caved in, too, a few months ago after my younger brother told me that if my Grandpa could sign up for an account, I could get with the times and join as well. I honestly don't spend much time on it, though. It's a little overwhelming at first, but, like you, I just don't have the time to let myself get addicted. I poke in every once in a while, update my status, and read those of a few friends, and that's it. It's enough.

How funny you did that because the last couple days matt and I have discussed the same thing and he got a facebook account and I'm going to also. I probably will use my blog though as my main site that I will keep updated.

Matt has only had his account for a week now and a ton of his old mission people have contacted him so its been kinda cool!

I've loved Facebook because it's been a way to keep in touch with my scattered friends (some people I haven't seen in over 10 years have contacted me again). I even found a family I taught on my mission and haven't heard from since! It's also a good way to keep in touch with extended family, since many of them don't blog but they use Facebook. But it is easy to let it suck your time; I'm careful about not putting too much of my personal info on there and I don't do very many of the little quiz things.

Also, you can play around with the privacy settings and set it up so people in the ward can't see what your family sees and other stuff like that.

I've been on Facebook for awhile but honestly, I really don't get what all the hype is. Sure you can become "friends" with long-lost people but the "reconnection" is very limited. And the fact that everything is posted from when someone is brushing their teeth to so and so just took a quiz is pretty invasive.

That's kind of the feeling I'm getting Erin. It's not my style at all. So much like MySpace (which I despise) but cleaner looking and cleaner content since you can choose your friends.

I had a facebook acct set up last year so i could see pics of my niece since they don't blog, but I ended up closing my acct about a month ago b/c i hated it. it was too much like myspace and didn't really allow for meaningful discussions. it was more of pointless one-line fragments telling what someone was doing at that moment. Really, I don't care if you (not YOU, just you in general) just painted your nails or if you just got puked on-tell me something important. Everyone in my ward has an acct and they keep in contact that way, but I am satisfied with the face-to-face contact that we get at church. I think it is more personable that way. If I don't get to talk to someone at church, I just give them a call or stop by and say hi. It keeps people and friendships real.

OK, your mom caved in too. I am constantly getting messages saying some friend wants me to join them on facebook. So I did. But I didn't see your picture. A few of my other kids, but not you. Did you use a different email address or something? Mom

I sure did. I'm so glad I did too!

I used my gmail. It's just celiabrasfield at gmail.

Be REALLY selective about who you let be your "friend". They don't get a message that says Celia ignored your request to be her friend. Seriously, some people I was glad to say goodbye to. Also, Aaron taught me that on your live feed you can hover over their comment and either hide the person or hide the thing (like quizes or mafia wars blah, blah blah)
