Kicking a Cough

You know, kicking a cough while pregnant seems neigh unto impossible. I've been coughing uncontrollably for almost a week now, and it doesn't seem to be letting up one bit. It's worst when I lay down at night. I haven't had a restful night's sleep in over a week!

I've tried herbal teas, vinegar and honey drinks, gargling salt water, baby vicks vaporub, and cough drops. I've coughed so hard and long I've thrown up two or three times because of it. My chest itches horribly, my nose is stuffed up, I sound like a baritone and I can't stop coughing. I'm getting pretty sick of it I tell you. And I can't really do anything about it. Grrrr...

I know this is probably just a new old wives tale but I just heard someone say to keep from coughing put vics vaporub on your feet and cover with socks before bed. why not?

Actually, my pediatrician (and the other docs in the office) swear by that foot method, too.

Have you called your doctor to see if you should be tested for Pertussis? It went around this area last year and all the docs were concerned about their pregnant ladies.

I have an ob visit on Thursday. If I don't get better by then I'll ask. Never heard of the foot thing. Interesting.

That is the worst combination: sick and pregnant. I hope you feel better soon!!!

have you tried putting a water vaporizer in your room when you sleep at night? I always like the zinc lozenges when I have a cold too. I understand that pregnancy also can cause nasal cavities to swell and your saliva to be overactive which would seem to only agitate your cold. Maybe the nose strips might help you be able to breath through your nose at night? Anyway, just some ideas. Good luck!

Darnit! It's never fun being sick. So sorry!! How's your family? Life? I'd love to hear all the details. Lots of love...Julie Moore.

My kids were both coughing and the dr. ended up giving me a nebulizer to use with them a few times a day (the nebulizer is like a humidifier for medicine so the meds go directly to your lungs). I think they have something like asthma but not as serious. Anyways, I do hope you get rid of the cough fast - being sick is no fun, especially when you're expecting a baby!
