Never too young to start...right?

There are so many types of fountains.

Water fountains: Good
Drinking fountains: Good
Soda fountains: Good
Chocolate fountains: Good

Spit up fountains: Not so good
Pee Fountains: Bad
Poo fountains: Worse

Dean likes the latter three the most right now. He is such a poo machine that even though I change him after he's gone, he goes again while I'm changing him. Sheesh. Can't the kid take a little break from the pooping? I see endless laundry and diapers for the next couple of years. A week and a half isn't too young to start potty training, now is it? Any tips on changing boys (other than speed) so I can at least avoid the fountain part and him squirting all over?

we had a "pee rag" that we would put over the member in question whenever we changed a diaper. it saved us much wetness.

Good Luck!

Man do I hear ya about the messing changes! I swear every time I would forget to put something under Noah the first couple weeks when I changed him he would get nasty poo squirts all over my bed!!! It was like it was more fun going once the diaper came off. But the good news is it will get better. Now Noah only poops every couple days or once a day (which I found out is totally normal for strictly breastfed babies- we did a mix with formula with Covey)But ya, I agree with the "pee rag"! Good idea!

Sometimes it helps to change his diaper in a place that isn't too drafty. In my experience, a breeze or a sudden change in temperature (aside from just the plain old need to go) will induce a fountain. But I agree with the above...keep a cloth nearby and cover him while he's nekkid. Or, if you want to spend the money, you can get these things called Pee Pee Tee Pees. They're just little triangles of cloth you can put over them. Kind of silly...we actually have never used the ones we were given as a gift. Hmm. About the poop, I don't have much to say except good luck, and welcome to the Motherhood Club!

once we took the eldest to DC and we brought 2 outfits thinking that would be enough...she pooped through all 3! We had to take her home in a yellow onsie. I haven't had a problem with the other two but man I feel your pain!

We've been doing the pee rag thing, but I've found it just makes it run down his stomach and onto his back soaking his blanket underneath and his clothes. It does keep it from turning into a fountain, which is good.

I would change the youngest with a spare diaper under the old diaper. Sometimes it would ruin the new diaper, but better than another mess. He will grow out of it! I still think man you better not pee on me!

Funny! Brandon has been showered with the poop fountain. I however have not been. Little girls still pee when you change them it just does not project like boys! I could do a load of laundry for Lily everyday, it's crazy! But it is all so much fun! Hope your enjoying your little guy.

I usually change S on a lap pad, that way when the pee or poop fountain happens the pad catches it. I can then just take the pad to the sink, rinse it and put it in the laundry. Of course this means you need to have a bunch of lap pads. THeric will often put a wipe or two under the baby if all the lap pads are dirty. We also use the 'pee rag.'

We also try to always do a change in the same spot, a spot cleared of things that we do not want to wash constantly, a spot that is easy to wipe poop and pee off of. For S we bought an actual changing pad, it has a seat belt and raised sides and a cover. The cover is often in the laundry, so the change happens on the plastic of the pad, so if a mess happens, it's super easy to wipe up.

But what I found most useful was to just change my attitude about the whole thing. Yeah, it's gross but I decided it was no big deal. It's just breast milk in a new form;) It will be much much more gross when he starts eating other things. Constant laundry and cleaning up messes is just part of being a parent; it's best to come to terms with this now.

There, that's all my wisdom on this topic, hope it is useful.

It gets much better, I promise. Really, it's only a year (not a couple) of endless laundry! :)

Have you seen the pee pee tee pee's? It's like a little tee pee shield thing. I think you can order them online, but they are basically the same as a rag. Boys are dangerous. I still remember Josh peeing at about 12 months in a Target changing station, and watching it fountian above him and puddle next to his face. lovely.

I'm not too bothered by it. the poo fountain is really what i'd like to avoid, but sometimes it's unavoidable i guess. I knew this was part of parenting before I signed up for it. It is easy, though, to underestimate how much time and effort go into caring for a little infant.

When you change his diaper, put the new one under him. Then open the old diaper to let cold air in and then cover him up for a few seconds so he can pee. Then hurry and take the old one away and the new one is ready to be done up. I hope that makes sense.

Yes, it does make sense. I'll try that next time. =)

Yep, new diaper under the soiled one, before you've even taken off the tabs. Do it quickly (no brainer ;)) and remember, the poo does slow down in a couple of months. (Hmmm...Ethan still poops 6+ times a day. HE's 2 next week. And we're talking the real deal here!)

Also, Ashley was our explosive pooper. Once when I just barely took her diaper off, she "blew" and it hit the wall 4 feet away! She would blow through almost every diaper, up her back, all over. She also spit up a TON. I thought every baby was like that, but the following three were not at all.

Are ya coming to AZ? If so, can't wait to meet Dean!

Jacqui, I'm not going to AZ for thanksgiving. It's just too much. I'm sad I'll miss everyone, but I just don't feel up to it.
