5 weeks post op

Well, it's been 5 weeks since I had my little Dean. I had my six week check up today and everything looks good. I'm 3 lbs. from my starting weight, but my body doesn't quite look it. But what can I expect when I had major surgery and can't exercise yet? Sometime soon I'll be able to work on flattening the pooch. It could be worse.

Dean's doing better. He's still pretty fussy, but we figured out at least one reason he was crying soooo much. After reading the Secrets of the Baby Whisperer, we realized he was tired beyond tired as well as overstimulated. He has a really hard time falling asleep if anything else is going on around him. So, he's not one of those babies that just falls asleep when he's tired. We've been working on noticing his tired signs from the outset and try putting him down immediately. It doesn't always work, and sometimes it takes him 30+ min. to fall asleep, but he's been much better with the extra sleep. He also has gas that contributes to his fussiness. I think my holiday eating has agreed with his stomach.

But enough of this blab. Lets get to the pictures. The pictures in the green shirt are from today. (I love the one where it looks like he's dancing.)

You and Dean both look so great. I swear he still looks totally like Matt to me.

Such a cutie! With both of my kids I rapidly went right back to my pre-baby weight and got stuck there. Blah. Also, after two babies I now have a major poochy tummy and am trying to figure out how to make it go away. If I think of anything, I'll tell you :)

I also figured out with both my kids that tired=fussy. I turned into an obsessive clock-watcher and wouldn't let them stay awake more than an hour or so as infants. Good luck with the fussiness.

Don't you love how raising an infant is like one huge experiment full of trial and error? Sometimes Blake and I think we're onto something with Garrett....and then it turns out we missed the mark. So we try again. Our poor guinea pig baby, though. Hmm...I suppose all we can do is learn together. Good luck with your own baby experiment!

Anyway, you look guys all look happy and healthy, which is fabulous.

3 lbs.!?!?! Oh my GOODNESS! That's crazy! You've really bounced right back! Way to go! You look great! It gives the rest of us something to shoot for! He is changing so much--I mean...he's already dancing and everything! :) He's so cute.

Yeah, we learned about this same time with Patrick that the crying was almost always about being overtired. We became absolute devotees of the book "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child." It made a major difference for us to learn how to help him sleep. It's so funny though--every baby is so very different. I found myself totally jealous of my brother's new baby who just "dozes off" all day and never, ever cries. Hope I get one like that someday! But in the meantime, as long as you can help the one you have learn to sleep better, you will all be so happy.

Thanks guys.

Amanda-I think you're right. The more I look at him, the more I think he looks like a Brasfield.

Foxyj-If I figure it out, I'll tell you the secret to flattening the pooch.

Lindsay-So true.

V-I think you're right about exercising before. I think it helped speed up my recovery.

Brooke-isn't it amazing how quickly they change. Tomorrow he'll be wanting to borrow the car keys.

AmyJane-my sister swears by that book also. I looked for it at half price books, but they didn't have it. Since I have no transportation during the day, I've had a hard time getting to the library.

Zippy, Jess and Hopewell-Again, thanks. After seeing the picture I was slightly disappointed. The mirror is a little more forgiving than the camera in my opinion.

You are brave to wear a tight fitting shirt so soon. It always takes me about 5 months to really be back to pre-pregnancy form. Until then I just wear bigger shirts (nice for nursing anyway. And princess cut and A-line shirts are in style now, luckily, but you probably don't feel like wearing anything that resembles maternity clothes right now.

Celia Marie (W.) B. said...

Well, honestly, I don't have a lot of choice. I always wore tighter shirts before I was pregnant, so that's all I really have...

I have a few princess cut things, but they WERE my maternity shirts! I even wore
this shirt
a long time into pregnancy. It's tight, but it has pretty good stretch to it.

You look great! If I told you about my latest baby you'd be jealous, (I've never read any sleep book and I'm on #4 baby) I guess Heavenly Father knows I couldn't handle it!:) It sounds like you are doing an Amazing job and that you are really enjoying Dean every step of the way!

I can't believe you! 3 pounds?? You are so awesome and look so crazy good! I'm just barely about 5pounds more than pre-pregnancy.
I know you probably are getting more advice than you want but I gave my baby acidopholus for her gassiness. I would just get the powder for kids and let her suck it off my finger everyday. It helps so much with digestion.

I don't know if anyone has told you about the Simethicone gas drops or not but we LOVE them. There is a generic at wal-mart. McKay acts like it is candy and it really helped a ton during the REALLY gassy phase. Another thing my friend told me is if you rub their back, esp lower back, in a downward motion it helps them pass the gas or whatever is causing the discomfort. Helped me!

Thanks for all the tips. So far I have heard the following for helping relieve gas:

Have them drink warm water from a bottle.

Mylicon

Acidophillys

Simethicone gas drops

Back rubs

Did I miss anything?
