Possible disaster.

well, last week at my check up my doctor spoke with me about birth control and put me back on the pill. i was told that it could temporarily decrease my milk supply but that it should come back after a little bit. i've been on it a week and I've noticed a definite change in my milk supply for the worse. up until now i've had ample. now i feel like he never gets enough to eat and he sucks me dry quickly. i'm starting to get cracked and i hurt.

i'm angry at myself that i didn't research it more than my dr's word. after looking at things on the internet tonight, i've decided it was the wrong decision to start at all. hopefully i can get back to my normal supply by stopping now. it's only been 1 week.

i am angry and sore and i hope this isn't a horrible disaster.

on a totally unrelated side note, we blessed him today at church. I'll post pics and write about that later though. my in-laws are in town, so it's a little harder to find time to post at the moment.

Ugh. I have no good things to say about the pill...and I've tried a lot of kinds! My doctor did the same thing right after I had Spencer and I also regret going back on it that soon. Darn hormones! I hope things get back to normal for you and that you start feeling better!

So sorry! Hopefully you will be back to normal soon!

I had the same thing happen, except I dried up completely. I can't nurse anymore and he's only 4 months :(

On a happier note (possibly) I've heard of a herbal supplement you can take that helps increase your milk supply. I could look more into if you wanted.

Wait, did he put you on a regular pill (estrogen&progesterone)? Or did this happen on the mini pill (just one, I can't remember which)? My understanding was that the minipill usually is successful with nursing moms, but that the regular pill is almost always disastrous.
In any case, I would imagine that after just a week of decreased supply you and baby should be able to rebound quickly--lots of water, rest and frequent nursings. Good luck!

Oh, and the herbal supplements that are supposed to be useful are fenugreek and blessed thistle. They work great for a lot of people.

She put me on ortho-tricyclin lo since that was what i was on before and hadn't had a problem with it. i didn't take it last night and i can already tell a difference in my milk. hopefully it means i wasn't on it long enough to have the same problem as you jess. =(

Yeah... if you want to be able to use the pill, go back and request a "mini-pill"--it's progestin only (I looked it up in my HUGE nursing book). And then tell your doctor off for not suggesting that in the first place. Good to know that the supply is rebounding!

Be careful of the mini-pill. If you didn't have any problems getting pregnant it might not provide enough protection. You might have to go with alternatives.

I've also heard dangers of the herbal supplements. Drink lots of water and keep up with the nursing you will be fine.

Use the Lansinoh lanolin cream for the pain...it works wonders!

Things are looking better. I'll just go another route altogether.

Oh man! I'm glad you stopped when you did- that's strange that your doctor would say that. You definitely want to stay away from anything with estrogen in it because it will decrease the quality and quantity of your milk. Also, don't take antihistamines or decongestants unless you absolutely have to because they will also dry your milk up. Glad to hear that things are going better. Dean's blessing looked so sweet and what a cute baby he his!

Ugh! I can't believe your that doctor put you back on the pill so soon!!! You should be angry!

My midwife really wanted me to have some birth control, but strongly discouraged the pill. So we went with something else--a diaphragm.

Glad to hear your supply appears to be rebounding.
